Actress Gemma Atkinsontook part in the inaugral Night Ride:

She said at the launch "I’m so excited that the first ever Night Ride cycling event is in my home town of Manchester.

"Heart disease touched my life when I was 17 years old and I lost my dad to heart disease. He was just 52 years old and led a healthy and active life. I’m determined to help raise money and awareness so that others don’t have to go through what I have."

Over 650 intrepid cyclists battled through some of the heaviest rain of the summer to raise tens of thousands of pounds for British Heart Foundation in the inaugural Night Ride.

This adventurous group set off from the Trafford Centre at 1am headed by actress Gemma Atkinson, all lights shining in a mass of hi-viz, and towards the famous Tower. Kept refreshed along the way at 3 feed stops, including a soup stop at our own offices, the darkness was no hindrance with some of the first riders finishing just after 4am!

Blackpool had kept on the Illuminations especially for the event giving the riders a nice very bright finish.

The wonderful Bread and Butter company had them in stitches with their comedy routine, whilst BBC Presenter and Radio Lancashire Breakfast Show host Graham Liver proved he’s not just an early bird by working through the night as presenter at both sites.

The riders all seemed to have a great time as the comment from Chris says
