This 4-day cycle challenge saw over 30 riders
make their way from Ripley Castle in Harrogate, all the
way up to and across the Scottish borders before
finishing in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh. Although not an
easy challenge, it was one enjoyed by all and they
passed some incredible sites on the way, including; the
Black Sheep Brewery, Tibetan Centre and the cobbled
streets of Alston where Oliver Twist was filmed.
The start venue for this venture was
the beautiful Ripley Castle. This was
generously provided by Sir Thomas Ingilby himself, who
showed his support before the riders left in spirit
“Barnardo’s do tremendous work supporting children and
young people. By doing this challenge you’ll be helping
them with their work and what a great achievement it is
to have cycled from the Castle all the way to Holyrood.
We’ll give the team a good send off but I’m afraid I
won’t be joining them as I don’t don lycra for anybody!”
Day 2 saw the riders stop for morning
refreshments in a car park in Langholm, right by the
Library.
Pennine Events helped organise this
event on behalf of Xceed Events, and were very pleased
with the success of it. “Over 220 miles
were covered by our intrepid cyclists, and all in the
aid of Barnardo’s. Over £25,000 was raised which is just
fantastic.” Says Graham Jagger of Pennine Events.
Although the scenery may be beautiful, the
route certainly wasn’t an easy pedal as the hills were a
challenge for all. The reward however was in the
descents and the great sense of achievement when
Edinburgh finally came into view.
Sharing the experience with other riders
created a sense of camaraderie, as they spurred each
other on up the toughest hills, and then relaxed with a
few drinks and laughs at the end of each day.
