Colne Grand Prix – Wednesday 13th July 2011
More than 1,500 people lined the streets on the 13th
July as Olympian Ed Clancy proved he still has the
golden touch to win the annual Colne Grand Prix.
In doing so he conquered several other present and
former World and Olympic Champions like Rob Hayles,
local boy Steven Burke and Dean Downing as they battled
it out on an 800m street circuit through the historic
market town of Colne. The event, which is part of
British Cycling's Elite Men’s Circuit Series and the
annual Pendle Cycle Fest, is organised by Pennine Events
and sponsored by local company cottages4you.
For the first time, there was also an entertaining
chopper bike dash with a Le Mans-style start in aid of
Leukaemia and Lymphoma Trust and Cycle Sport Pendle.
Over 30 people, many of whom were in fancy dress, took
part in this prelude to the main race. The Dash was won
by former World Champion Rob Hayles. It was also
featured in The Guardian.
The race was shown on Sky Sports whilst BBC North West
broadcast live from the event.
