Record breaking number of cyclists ride from Glasgow to
Edinburgh in the 'freshnLo Pedal for Scotland' event
Over 9000 people got on their
bikes, on Sunday 12th September for the biggest mass
participant cycle ride in Scotland.
Choosing from three rides to
suit all ages and experience:
-
51 Mile Classic Route
-
100 Mile Sportive
-
Off Road Family Ride

Cycling City to City - The 51
Mile Clasic Route
The legendary original freshnlo
Pedal for
Scotland
ride, the
Glasgow
to Edinburgh
bike ride attracts thousands of cyclists every year
thanks to its classic combination of a great route,
brilliant atmosphere and free food and drink.

The ride takes cyclists on a tour
of Scotland's two largest cities via
rolling countryside across the very best route across
the country, perfected over the last 12 years to feature
a great mix of quiet back roads, closed roads and cycle
paths.
The rest stops, which are placed
roughly every ten miles across the route, are another
major factor in the event's popularity:
At
Drumpellier
Country
Park
cyclists were delighted to re-fuel on bananas, energy
bars and chocolate (guilt-free-this is a 50 mile
ride!).
At Avonbridge the local church
group was back again with their vast selection of home
baking and teas and coffee, accompanied this year by the
sounds of a string quartet.

A much welcome rest stop, was the free lunch served in the lochside
grounds of the
beautiful and historic Linlithgow Palace-sandwiches,
pasta and soup and a roll, plus teas, coffees and all
the free ice cold milk people could drink.

The Linlithgow Folk Festival had a
special Pedal for
Scotland
stage in the grounds to provide the tunes.
Sponsors Scotmid transformed the
humble Kirkliston Leisure Centre into a Parisian-style
cafe for the day, as cyclists were treated to pastries,
cakes and coffee, as an accordion player evoked the
sounds of the Champs Elysee.
The final stop at
Edinburgh's Victoria Park had
entertainment from Real Radio and The Riderz Cycle Stunt
Team, plus a range of catering outlets and stalls.
The 100 Mile Sportive Ride
The freshnlo Pedal for Scotland Sportive was a brand new
ride of 100 miles from Glasgow to Edinburgh.

The route took
riders through the Southern Uplands and down into
Edinburgh passing through 7 local authorities and
incorporating the best sections of numerous Scottish
cycle racing circuits, including the A77 10 Mile Time
Trial, sections of the Moscow APR and the Strathaven
Anderside Classic, incorporating steep climbs around
Muirkirk and undulating stretches across wild moorland.
Rest stops at Galston, Douglas and Carnwath
gave the cyclists a chance to refuel, with the
Douglas stop featuring a timing mat, so that
the cyclists could take the time to enjoy their free lunch of
sandwich or pasta salad with out it affecting times.

The Sportive was a much more challenging ride for
regular cyclists. The Sportive used the same start and
finish points as the Challenge ride but took a
completely seperate route to give riders a clear run to
get the best time they can. The transport service served
Sportive riders too, meaning there was an easy and
hassle free way to get cyclist and bike to the start in Glasgow, or back home from Edinburgh at the finish.
NEW: The Off Road Family Ride
The Family Ride turned out, as promised, to be a great
day out for parents with young children or those new to
cycling.
The ride was free to enter, and in addition to
the joys of traffic free cycling there were loads of
other great reasons to come along, including live music
by The Singing Kettle, 7Stanes performed their bike
stunt show, ride with BBC1's The Man Who Cycled the
World Mark Beaumont, free goody bag, free medal,
certificate and cycle computer for every entrant, a
cycle skills course, face painting and other fun
activities plus Stabilisers Off!-free sessions with
qualified trainers for youngsters who want to ditch
their stabilisers.
