To mark the completion of the Guild Wheel, Lancashire County Council, in partnership with Preston City Council, will be hosting an exciting celebration event on Sunday 19 August. Everyone is Welcome!

 

Built by Lancashire County Council, the Preston Guild Wheel is a 21 mile greenway that encircles the city's perimeter. The Guild Wheel route makes the most of the different landscapes that surround the city, creating a rich and varied environment for everyone to enjoy.

The official opening ceremony of the Preston Guild Wheel will be taking place at Avenham Park on Sunday 19 August with a ribbon cutting by the Mayor of Preston and Chairman of the County Council. The ribbon cutting will take place at 11:30am (near the Riverside Cafe).

To celebrate the opening of the Guild wheel there will be the opportunity to take part in a charity bike ride of the route or cycle a smaller 2.5 kilometer section with your family.

At the same time, there will be a range of attractions and activities on offer such as:

- A performance of Bicycle Ballet
- Cycle stunts
- Information Stalls
- Taster opportunities
- Bicycle maintenance and repair experts

 

We are providing consultancy services and assistance to Preston City Council and Lancashire County Council for the day’s activities, which include a mass ride around the Guild Wheel and a large Show in Avenham Park together with shorter fun rides.

 

Charity Bike Ride

To celebrate the opening a special charity bike ride, sponsored by James Hall & Co (Spar), will be taking place for everyone wanting to try out the Guild Wheel Route. We welcome participants of all ages and fitness levels to get involved.

The Guild Wheel is a 21 mile circular route around Preston taking in Avenham Park, Riversway, Broughton and back through Brockholes Nature Reserve.

You can choose to start your ride at one of the three official start/finish points along the way, these are:

- Avenham Park
- James Hall (Spar) car park
- UCLan Sports Arena

There is a small £5.00 fee to register for the event and all money raised from entries will go to St Catherines Hospice. In addition we hope that riders will also seek individual sponsorship and raise even more money for good causes. Spar will be providing bespoke medals to those who register and complete the circuit on the day.

Riders should be aware that the event is not a race. The Guild Wheel itself is only a 3 metre wide track and includes several busy road crossings where riders will encounter traffic and toucan crossings (although Marshalls will be present to help with this) as well as this the route will also be open to the public and other users on the day.

Family Bike Ride

Families with smaller children wishing to watch the charity bike ride but not wanting to take part in the 21 mile route can be involved in the day by participating in a much smaller 2.5 kilometre family cycle loop.

 

There are two family bike ride routes to choose from:
- Avenham Park
- Brockholes Nature Reserve

Again the fee for this event will be £5.00 per family (up to 5 people). Each family loop starts from the same starting point as the main charity bike ride but is self guided along a separate off road route away from the Guild Wheel.

The Avenham Park loop takes part of the Bamber Bridge cycleway over the trambridge before heading back to Avenham Park via the aquaduct.

The Brockholes family loop starts on the Guild Wheel but takes in an alternative route around the reserve, one in which cycles are not normally permitted.

Registered riders will receive a certificate to commemorate their ride and participation in the Guild Wheel opening event. Again all registration money will go to St Catherines Hospice.
